Types of systems
A fire detection system basically consists of the fire detection elements, the system control (control panel) and the elements for transmitting the alarm (acoustic sirens, warning lights, telephone diallers, etc.). For detection systems, the time that elapses is a basic variable. The control panel continuously compares the status of the detectors with their theoretical status in their surrounding environment, and reacts as programmed. The quality of a detection system is not only determined by its components: to a large extent, its success also lies in the correct design of the parts making up the system.


How they work
Optical smoke detector: Its operating principle is based on an analysis of air opacity as regards smoke particles, generating a signal when the levels exceed the established limits.

Fixed temperature detector, electrical model: its operating principle consists of a bimetal that closes an electrical contact when it dilates by fusion of an alloy which closes an electrical circuit or releases a contact under tension when it changes to liquid state. A brief temperature increase of 4.5 °C/min. can dilate the body and trigger the alarm signal.

Duct spark detection systems: this type of detectors detect sparks in the zone close to infra-red, reacting to the slightest light intensity, and they are therefore used in non-lit areas (inside ducts). In ducts where materials are conveyed to siloes, if the materials knock into each other they can produce sparks, causing the material stored in the silo to ignite and cause a fire. For this type of application, the spark detector associated with a water spray system is used. There are three types of systems: LOA 1, LOA 2 and LOA 3. The maximum air speed in the duct must be 30 - 32 m/s.

Continuous temperature detector system (detector cable): this system is based on a solid-state continuous integration detector cable. Any overheating or fire detected by the cable is converted into a signal which is transferred to an alarm.
